DIY: How to Make Your Own Natural, Essential Oil Candles

All candles need some wax to keep them burning! If we’re using only natural ingredients, this means that we would have to choose between beeswax and soy wax. You need to also take into consideration that oils have less strength than chemically created fragrances, thus you might find yourself using more than you thought. To make great smelling candles, you will need about 400 drops of essential oils (or 4 teaspoons of the stuff). This oil should be added at the right time to be sure to maximize its properties. You should wait until the melted wax is 185˚F and then add the oil.
You can create a candle with almost any scent you can imagine, but today we’re going to go with: Eucalyptus Peppermint Scented Candle ;)
- One 4 ounce glass or tin with a cap for the finished candle
- 100% cotton wicks
- 2 cups of pure soy wax flakes
- Glass jar or aluminum can for melting wax
- Old kitchen thermometer
- Tape or popsicle sticks to hold the wicks
- 100 drops eucalyptus essential oil
- 100 drops peppermint essential oil
- Place the wax flakes in any glass jar or an aluminum can.
- Bring about two inches of water to a simmer in a saucepan and place the can with the wax in the center. You will see that the wax will start to melt. Wait until the wax melts completely!
- Remove the can check the temperature of the wax every few minutes until you see it has cooled down to about 185 degrees.
- Add your essential oils and stir to combine everything.
- In the jar you will use for the candle, place the wick in the center and use tape or popsicle sticks to keep it upright.
- Finally, pour the wax into the tin and allow it to cool for 24 hours before lighting.
- Light up and enjoy!
